Bike Share at UBC

The City of Vancouver has announced that it will be launching a public bicycle system, similar to the systems already established in Toronto and Montreal. Such a system aligns well with UBC’s goal to improve sustainable transportation options on campus, and could help to reduce travel times on campus and connect students, faculty and staff with the businesses, cultural attractions, neighbourhoods and regional transit facilities on campus.

In the coming weeks and months, UBC will be working closely with the City of Vancouver to explore how we might participate in this exciting initiative. Check back for updates and information or join our e-newsletter list to receive notification about the development of a UBC public bicycle system, as well as other Campus + Community Planning events.

The project includes electrical connections for e-assist bikes, directional bike signage, a new curb-cut to improve safety between vehicles and cyclists and improved lighting to create a safer environment after dark.

To access the facility, follow the bike stencils from Lower Mall. Please use the northeast parkade entrance. For access to the facility visit the AMS Bike Kitchen, located in the Student Union Building. Be sure to bring a valid piece of UBC photo ID to sign up for access to this free facility. Car2Go is On-Campus!

Car2go has worked with the University of British Columbia to bring more flexible on-campus parking to students. Car2go designated on-street parking will be available in select locations on the UBC Campus, starting April 1. The parking spots are located on campus directly across the street from the Northern Bus Loop and can accommodate up to eight car2go; and off campus at Wesbrook Village where an additional eight cars can be parked.

Expanding the car2go Network
car2go launched in Vancouver in June 2011 with 225 cars, 2,000 members, and an average of 1,500 trips per week. Today there are more than 10,000 car2go members in Vancouver, and the number of trips per week has increased to more than 8,000. To meet the demands of this increased utilization, an additional 100 car2go edition smart fortwo cars will be added to the Vancouver network and will be available for members to use collaboratively, beginning in April.

Additionally, car2go will begin a pilot with several smart fortwo electric drive vehicles to determine further development of electric carsharing in Vancouver.

5 Big Changes to U-Pass

The new cyclist handbook.

The New Cyclist Handbook

Available in 5 Languages!

The cycling handbooks outline rules of the road, safety tips, helmet and bicycle fitting, and resources to find out more about safe and enjoyable cycling. Printed and available online, the handbook is in five languages: Punjabi, Korean, Tagalog, simplified Chinese, simplified English.

Improving mobility options for all language communities, and especially newcomers to Canada is an important part of independence, connecting people to their communities, and increasing their opportunities to choose active, sustainable options.
